My Story - Judith, Grand Forks

Judith Konerza
Supporter, Grand Forks, ND

My name is Judith Konerza and I am a 25 year resident of Grand Forks, North Dakota. My family and I came here for an Air Force tour of duty and chose to remain in this community to raise our children. We have not regretted that decision.  One of the key reasons for staying here was the quality of life in a small community, good schools, and opportunities for involvement. My husband and I, along with our children, have both contributed to and benefitted from volunteerism in our community.

Students Today Leaders Forever is an excellent example of community members contributing to the community. Grand Forks students in middle schools, high schools, and the University of North Dakota give numerous hours for the good of our community. I have personally witnessed and experienced the benefits of their service.

I do volunteer work with a group of 18 widows, varying in age from 50 – 87. STLF students volunteer to visit, grocery shop, or clean – all in efforts to come alongside and encourage these ladies. Other STLF student volunteer opportunities can be for childcare, fund raising to supply children with back packs and supplies for school, cleaning parks, manning booths for agencies, and a host of other volunteer and service opportunities.

Key to their success is the connection and relationships they build with one another and members of our community. These students meet regularly for learning opportunities and group service opportunities. Through service, relationships and sense of ownership are strengthened. Support from the communities they work in allows this key component to take place in the development of leaders for our community, the nation, and even the world.

These students are learning valuable skills that will accompany them as they graduate and move on. Lessons of value, while often not seen, are the very things that change lives and impact those they come in contact with.

Truly, it is a privilege to share in opportunities of growth, contribution and learning with members of our community and the world.  It is my privilege to come alongside this group, with service, time, and finances, as they embark on a Pay It Forward Tour this spring.
