My Story - STLF Camp Leaders

STLF Leadership Camp Stories
June 2005 - Fayette, IA

Lucy Hartwell - Minneapolis, MN

I had an amazing time at camp! I came in to the experience anxious and timid. I knew almost nothing about camp which was incredibly intimidating. The first day everyone was open and amazing. I immediately adjusted my attitude and attempted to reach out to others rather than withdraw within myself. I was able to build strong relationships in such a short time...

The most amazing and life changing experience for me was the stories from within. All leaders were asked to share a personal story to the group. Having always been afraid of being vulnerable the experience was incredibly challenging but I felt so loved after I shared my story. I left camp with a new confidence and respect for myself and for others. I learned not to judge others and realized that a positive attitude can make all the difference in the world. I will never forgot this experience!

Lashawntianna Brown - Chicago, IL

When I was first told I was going to camp in Iowa, I thought that it would be boring and could be doing something else with my free time. When I arrived at Camp I only knew the people that attended my school and that the other people were just strangers. All I kept thinking about was going home how I didn't want to be here.

As the days went by I met new people, laughed, cried, shared my story with others, and even became an awesome leader. I felt as if I had another family and that someone loved me for who I am. Now it's time for me to say my good byes and that I am so glad that I came to this awesome STLF Camp. It really helped me to step outside my box and helped me realized that I am a great leader.

Ciara Brewster - Crookston, MN

I had so much fun at this camp. When I first got here it was strange and I was with people I have never met before. But things came around and we all grew so close and being 8 hours from home I felt at home here. I will never forget the people I met and the things we did and the difference we made. I will never forget my first STLF camp!!! It was amazing!!!!

Krishaun Branch - Chicago, IL

STLF has been a great experience for me. The point for me coming to this camp was to keep me out of trouble, but i feel that I got the treat of my life at this camp. I started relationships with many people that didn't look like me but, had some relations to my story. Coming to this camp really helped me and taught me some new leadership skills that I can take back to Chicago and pass on to many of my friends. I will try to get more of the students at my school to have the same experience that I had. So I thank STLF for help me and making me a better person and giving me skills I can use for the rest of my life.

Saladin "Junior" Boyd - Flint, MI

It was an unreal time I had getting to know people from all over the U.S. and even one from Australia. I never knew that a group of young leaders could be so interested in getting to know me. I never was told that I inspire people until I came here. I would do it all over again with no hesitation any time, any day.

Anna Kozlowski - Fargo, ND

In today's society I think that people are afraid to let others care for them on a deep and meaningful level. I can truly say that with only one short week I have met some of my dearest friends. Friends that are not afraid to show their love and friends who can inspire through their stories. I would personally like to thank each and every one of the wonderful people that made an appearance in the "year of the leader."

I know that it is not the last time that we will all be together. The bonds that were made are everlasting and priceless. My wish for all of you is that you never forget how much you mean to someone else. You are greatly appreciated. With this amazing group of people the possibilities are endless... to keep this short and sweet... I love you all!!!! : )

Well, i went to Iowa aw the only one from my school, kind of anxious and passice. As the week progressed, i was so inspired by the other leaders, and the crew. I learned that everbody has a story, that you can make a difference, and you are never alone. I could connect to others on levels i never thought possible.

Definitely the best part of camp for me was the dream walk. Actually hearing what people thought of me and what i meant to them inspired me and gave me will and drive to make a difference, and being able to tell others what they meant to me was the most amazing experience.

The friendships and bonds i made at this camp were iron-clad. I'll never forget it, and i plan on coming to every possible STLF event i can, and starting STLF at my school.
