The Olympics Rock!
As the Olympics come to a close, I’d like to reflect on why I love the Olympics so much. The Olympics are one time every four years where the best athletes come from across the world to compete for Olympic gold. Not only is it a time for athletes to show their best skills, but also where athletes BECOME leaders and role models for young (and not so young) people. The Olympic spirit is contagious and I really connect with the values the sports and athletes embody. Here are a few great examples of the Olympic Spirit!
1) Team Attitude
While the media likes to get behind individual athletes, the teams sports are among my favorite events. Watching the women’s gymnastic team final or beach volleyball brings such a sense of joy. The #teamUSA spirit is contagious and I can’t help but cheer. What I love about the team energy is that it means you get to share the joy of winning a gold medal with your team and best friends! They say it can be lonely at the top, but when you’re on the top with a team, it can’t be that bad! Not bad at all.
2) Just because you’re the best doesn’t mean you can’t hang out with the rest.
Let’s all just smile and remember Missy Franklin. This girl won 4 gold medals and she’s only going to be a senior in high school! Instead of going on to multi-million dollar sponsorships, this fine young lady is keeping it real so she can go ahead and swim on a college team. She’ll be swimming for her high school team this year. How awesome? Can you imagine swimming in the lane next to Missy Franklin at your high school meet? It’d be hard to earn a state record when Franklin holds the world record! Her all star status hasn’t kept her from being normal.
3) Winning is great but losing isn’t bad
Most athletes are very results focused and always striving for the best, so it can be hard to settle for silver or bronze. But winning an Olympic medal is probably THE coolest thing ever. Actually, just having the opportunity to be in the Olympics representing your country as the best in your sport is awesome! I love the athletes who win silver and are greatful for the chance to compete. It’s ok to be disappointed, but it’s important to remember that you’re still an Olympian. My personal favorite silver medal winner is McKayla Maroney and while she might have inspired the funniest meme, she said, “I didn’t deserve to win gold if I landed on my butt; I’m not disappointed about the silver; I’m disappointed about my performance.” What a great girl!
