STLF Goes to the Capital!

Author:  Caitlin Plaza

About a month ago STLF was invited to participate in the most amazing conference that I have seen to date, The Clinton Global Initiative University. This conference was created by former President Bill Clinton to bring together the worlds next generation leaders, students. There were over 1,000 students from all 50 states as well as over 80 different countries. It was unbelievable seeing this many amazing individuals in one room. Each participant had submitted a Commitment to Action before the conference began.  Just like STLF, CGI U has a strong commitment to action and this happens through their process of submitting a commitment and having staff check in with the progress of their commitments as well as guiding them along the way.

In awe, has been the phrase that I have frequently used when describing this conference. The first day of the conference we had four students recognized for their Commitments to Action through STLF, Abe Lopez, Caroline Chen, Shelby Couch, and Christina Lee. (See the video below to watch Bill Clinton recognize their commitments.)These four students, also known as Capital Core, showed their leadership and truly embodied the meaning of STLF throughout the entire conference.

Yes, I was in extreme awe of the conference, the amazing speakers and people we were able to meet, but the ones I was truly in awe of was our students. The confidence they had to network with anyone they saw; their individuality and ability to hold their own away from our group and meet new people; their ability to connect with others, beyond surface level, in just 3 short days; the information that they knew about many of the other social issues that were discussed throughout the conference; and so much more. I was inspired by them each and every moment of the conference. They are true inspirations and show that youth are leaders and can make a difference in today's world. I cannot wait to see what they accomplish in their lifetimes.

Thank you to my Capital Core for making CGI U such a memorable experience.
