A Fun Perspective on STLF

Laura Renckens (6th grade) reacts to a newspaper article and her sister's experience.

Author: Laura Renckens, Future STLF Core Leader

Earlier this week, we posted an article from the Des Moines Register about a recent Tour stop in Indianola, Iowa.  Click here to read the article.  The article quoted Marie Renckens and several other Duluth area students who were on the Tour.  Marie's sister Laura chose this article  as a current event to write a school paper about for her 6th grade Minnesota History subject.  Keep reading for her thoughts and perspective!

My article is on STLF, which stands for Students Today Leaders Forever. This organization is all about doing good for the community and bonding. On October 16th, more than 30 students from Duluth, Bemidji, and Barnum took part in a Pay it Forward trip. A Pay it Forward trip is a trip for high school or college students to go around the U.S. and do community service. The students take part in bonding activities during nighttime, in community centers and churches. This particular trip was for the Duluth Central High School, which plans to close in spring 2011, sending half its students to Denfield High school and the other half to East High School. My sister Marie was one of the five college leaders going on the high school trip, after going on a Pay it Forward trip over spring break all around the country.

Serving in Indianola

STLF started in 2003 as a project by the University of Minnesota and has then since spread to other areas in the Midwest, like the University of Madison.

This affects the United States because the more publicity and good word about STLF, the more students will want to take part in it. This will create more community service, which also encourages students to do good outside of the Pay it Forward trips as well.

My personal thoughts on this are that I would love to do this when I am in high school or college. I think it’s a great way to bond with new people and realize that doing good makes you feel good. My sister loves STLF, and I think it’s great that the students would skip a long weekend, or maybe their entire Spring Break to do good for the community.

STLF helped my sister realize that doing community service is not boring, is not a chore, but it is an important way of life. I know she is not the only person who realized that through STLF.
